Matter of balance is an award-winning evidence based program designed to manage falls and increase activity levels. Many older adults experience concerns about falling and restrict their activities. This is a program offered one time per week for 8 weeks to examine concerns about falls and perform exercises that will increase strength and balance. You will be instructed by dedicated, trained volunteers who are eager to improve your balance and listen to your concerns.
Who should attend?
- Age 60 or over Ontario County residents concerned about falls
- Active older adults interested in improving balance, flexibility and strength
- Anyone who has fallen in the past
- Anyone who has restricted activities because of falling concerns.

Following a free Sept 12 information session, this four-part series addresses the cause of disease - rather than just treating the symptoms - and is presented by Kerry Graff, MD, and Linda Rowsick, RD, CD-N. Participants will learn about how diet impacts your health, the benefits of eating a whole-food/plant-based diet, and how to transition to a healthier diet. When two co-registrants - who register and pay at the same time - we will provide one set of books and handouts therefore discounting registration fee to $225. Topics will include: "Heroin: Its Impact on the Community", "Communication at the End of Life", "Financial Exploitation of the Elderly", "Motivational Interviewing" and "Caregiver Self Care." Community agencies and resources will also be present. And application for 6 social work continuing education hours will be submitted to the URMC Center for Experiential Learning and an application for 6 hours of nursing continuing education will be submitted to ONS. This annual chicken barbecue benefits palliative care at the M. M. Ewing Continuing Care Center, the 178-bed skilled-nursing facility operated by UR Medicine Thompson Health in Canandaigua. The meals, by Grove Boys Catering of Naples, each will include a marinated half chicken, salt potatoes, coleslaw and a dinner roll. A 50/50 raffle held during the barbecue will raise additional funds. Palliative Care at M. M. Ewing includes comforting items such as handmade quilts and CDs with soothing music as well as iPads for video chats with long-distance family members. IN addition, the program provides information for families regarding the end-of-life process and a "comfort cart" for families keeping vigil - with bottled water, snacks and toiletries. Special furniture is also provided, for family members who wish to stay overnight alongside their loved one.
